January 18, 2002: | Here is a little more information, and some links, on things to do
at Cacapon and Berkeley Springs, WV.
First of all, at Cacapon itself. We've already told you about the recreation activities (golf, lake swimming, boating, tennis, vollyball, hiking, tot-lots, horsebackriding), but they also have an extensive ranger program. In the summer, there are usually 2-3 activities a day. These range from arts and crafts to childrens theater to guided hikes. I find the night hikes to be the most exciting (yes, you really can hike at night!). If you have a chance, drive/hike to the scenic overlook at the top of Cacapon Mountain. On a nice day, the view is amazing. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed at the park. For detailed information on Cacapon, visit their website at http://www.cacaponresort.com. In the town of Berkeley Springs (about 9 miles from the Park), there are additional things to do. In recent years, Berkeley Springs has become a meca for those seeking various spa treatments. Visit the roman baths, get a massage, or soak in the mineral springs. The town also boasts a lot of antique and craft shops. There is an old-time movie theater that shows recent releases. And if you have the time, don't miss the Berkeley Springs Castle situated on the edge of town (yes, a real castle!). For detailed information on the town of Berkeley Springs, visit their website at http://www.berkeleysprings.com. If you'd like more information on activities, please let me know. See you this summer! January 10, 2002: | From what I have heard, most of you have made reservations for the
FIRST KURZ REUNION scheduled for July 12-13, 2002 - that's this year! As
I said before I am relying on the second generation of Charles and Flora
Kurz decendents to help get the news out and encourage ALL of us to renew
‘relative' friendships or make new ones!
The informal family dinner is scheduled for Saturday, July 13 about 5 pm in the conference center. For $9.95 (1/2 price for children 3 thru 11) we will have a buffet to include 2 entrees, 2 vegetables, potato, salad, rolls, dessert and beverage. I have chosen baked ham and grilled chicken breast for the entrees, glazed carrots and green beans for vegetables, and mashed potatoes. I will need your money by the first of July to reserve your place(s) - with the number of adults and the number of children. Some people have asked what there is planned for the children to do. I would assume many will be interested in the ranger activities. There is also swimming and boating in the lake, as well as horseback riding. We could also plan a ball game or other kids games if there is interest. Let me know your ideas. In the evening, the ‘great room' has loads of room for activites and there is a big activitiy room downstairs were the kids can congregate safely using video machines, pool and table tennis. E-mail or phone if you have suggestions or questions. Mary Kurz Anstead

August 14, 2001: | All you KURZ descendants of FLORA AND CHARLES KURZ
Well here is what I have lined up for our first KURZ REUNION next year: The reunion will be held weekend of July 12-13th, 2002 at Cacapon Resort State Park. A catered dinner will be held on Saturday the 13th at 5 pm (this time can be changed if we want a different time). For information on Cacapon Resort State Park, please visit their website at http://www.wvparks.com/cacapon/ . Additional information on the park and surrounding areas can be found here on the Kurz Website . 11 rooms and one 6-person standard cabin (they also have
one 4-person cabin available also) have been
You are asked to call 1 800 CALL WVA, ask for Cacapon Lodge, ask for KURZ REUNION-Mary Anstead, and make your reservation under your own name. They will require a deposit which is refundable up to 3 days before (2 weeks for cabins). If you plan to come just for the day - July 13 - we'll arrange a meeting place so you can get a pass to go swimming. Another possibility that we thought of since there a limited number of rooms - if a family wants to share a reservation, one part of the family could spend Friday night at the lodge (go home Saturday night) and another part of the family that comes on Saturday could sleep over Saturday night. There is also a small motel just outside of the entrance to the park and there is a large hotel in Berkeley Springs,as well as at Coolfont. If you are golfers, you might want to arrange your tee-time a few weeks in advance. We could arrnage to attend Mass together in Berkeley Springs
if you are interested - or if you know a
Hope to see you at this first KURZ REUNION!

July 16, 2001: | A few months back many of us gathered here at my house to meet Susan's
husband, Greg, whom she had married in February. Many of us
started talking about having a family reunion so the nieces and nephews,
aunt and uncles, and various cousins could get to know their extended family.
I offered to start the ball rolling and I hope it gets bigger and bigger!
My husband, Bob Anstead, and his family have done this for 51 years. My suggestion for the first one would be a weekend next year at Cacapon State Park outside of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. There are cabins and a lodge, golf course, horseback riding, swimming and boating, naturalist activities, tennis, and hiking. For the indoors man or woman Berkeley Springs has a hot springs spa (even George Washington went there) and numerous antique shops. For those who would not want to spend a weekend, it is only about 2 hours from the D.C. area, so one could drive up for the day and return home at night. Lunch or dinner buffet in their dining room is about $10-12; a picnic, including the pavilion rental, would be about $5-$7. The latter would entail a little more work for the organizer and a few helpers - buying food locally and cooking on grills. Rooms at the lodge are about $67 a night with 3 or 4 to a room. After the first reunion we can decide on future frequency, locations, and other input. So give me your thoughts: _____I like the idea of a family reunion.
